Raul Castro Presides Over Swearing-In Ceremony of New Cuban Ambassadors

CUBA, August 8, 2009. President Raul Castro presided over the swearing-in ceremony of 38 new Cuban ambassadors on Saturday in Havana. “Being an ambassador of the revolutionary Cuba is a big commitment with the homeland, with Fidel (Castro) and Raul (Castro), with the
Communist Party and with socialism, and it entails representing a people that have carried out so many heroic deeds,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Ana Teresita Gonzalez addressing the diplomats.

Alejandro Gonzalez, the new Cuban ambassador to Spain, spoke on behalf of the diplomats. “It is an honor for us to be sworn-in as ambassadors of Cuba and to represent the brave Cuban people and the socialist Revolution,” he said.

Prior to the ceremony and also with the presence of Raul Castro, the new ambassadors laid a floral wreath at the monument of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti at the Revolution Square in Havana.

Also present were Ricardo Alarcon, President of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament); Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla; the head of the Foreign Relations Department at the Central Committee of Cuba’s Communist Party, Jorge Marti Martínez; and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca.
