Communique of the Third National Meeting of Philippine Organizations of Friendship with Cuba

PHILIPPINES, August 13, 2009. The Third National Meeting of Philippine Organizations of Friendship with Cuba was held at the Cuban Embassy in Makati City, Metropolitan Manila, on August 13, 2009. The meeting was held on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and the 83rd Birthday of the Cuban Leader Fidel Castro Ruz.

The participants to this meeting were representatives of the Philippine-Cuban Friendship Association (AMISTAD), the Philippine-Cuban Friendship Society (PCFS), and the Philippines-Cuba Cultural and Friendship Association (PHILCUBA).

The meeting was held to give an update on the main issues presently concerning Cuba, and to exchange experiences among the friendship organizations regarding their activities in solidarity with Cuba. The welcome and opening remarks were given by Cuban Ambassador Jorge Rey Jimenez, who presented a concise briefing on the current economic and political situation in Cuba. An open forum ensued on many topics regarding Cuba.

There was an exchange of information and experiences among the 3 friendship organizations, with their representatives giving updates on the activities they have undertaken in solidarity with Cuba. The different friendship organizations also had particular Committees campaigning for the freedom of the 5 Cuban anti-terrorist heroes who are incarcerated in US jails, and updates on the activities of these Committees were also given.

To serve as a collective guide for coordinative or even united activities, a Plan of Action was drawn up for the strengthening of Philippine solidarity with Cuba. An Action Plan in support of the World Campaign for the Freedom of the Cuban-5 (September-December 2009) was also approved.

The participants also pledged to exert every effort to send representatives to the 5th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Solidarity with Cuba, which will be held in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, from March 19 to 20, 2010.

Finally, the participants also sent a message of felicitation to Cuban leader Fidel Castro Ruz on his 83rd birthday. (Cubaminrex- Embacuba Filipinas)
