Haitian President Thanks Fidel for his Solidarity During the event, attended by First Cuban Vice President Raul Castro Ruz, Preval said that the thousands of Haitian youths taking studies in Cuba are willing to offer their services back in their country. “They are the vanguard for economic and social transformation in my country,” said Preval and wished Fidel Castro a happy birthday. The Haitian President also expressed his thankfulness for the invitation he received to attend the celebrations and for the opportunity to speak at the ceremony. Prior to Preval´s statement, the director of foreign relations of the Guayasamín Foundation Alfredo Vera stressed the quality and organization of the homage paid to the Cuban President. Vera thanked Cuban authorities for their support of the different activities held in Havana since last November 28th and referred to the thousands of greetings and messages wishing Fidel Castro his fast recovery, particularly those sent in by Noble Peace Laureates Rigoberta Menchu and Adolfo Perez Esquivel, as well as by social activist Daniel Mitterrand and the president of the Culture of Peace Foundation Federico Mayor Zaragoza. Those four friends of Fidel were not able to attend the celebrations due to health problems or tight working agendas, said Vera. Vera read excerpts of the message sent by Federico Mayor Zaragoza which expressed that, “I admire Fidel for his capacity to preserve his country’s independence, dignity and because he has never kneeled down while his nation forms and sends doctors and teachers to other countries and its social achievements are much more than those of others which live under the tutelage of Washinton.” Other guests at the closing ceremony included president Evo Morales, of Bolivia; Nicaragua´s President-elect Daniel Ortega and the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonzalves.
