The Cuban Association of Pedagogues Awards Revolution Leader Fidel Castro

Cuba, Dec 21. - The Cuban Association of Pedagogues bestowed the acknowledgement “Outstanding Educator of the 20th Century” upon Revolution leader Fidel Castro on Monday, for being an exceptional teacher of his people and of revolutionaries from around the world.

During a tribute on the occasion of the day of Cuban educators, Lesbia Canovas, president of the Association, delivered the award to Jose Ramon Fernandez, Vice-president of the Council of Ministers, who will give it to Fidel.

Representing a larger group, more than 500 educators also received acknowledgements at Havana’s Mella Theater, for their contribution to Cuban education.

The Young Communists League (UJC) and students organizations proclaimed as “teachers of generations” a group of outstanding personalities from the fields of politics, culture and science, headed by Cuban Heroine Melba Hernandez.

The select group was made up by Faure Chomon, Alicia Alonso, Fina Garcia Marruz, Cintio Vitier (deceased), Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras, Ismael Lozada, Maximo Cabrera, Brigadier General Humberto Torres, and Dr. Lidia Turner, President of Honor of the Cuban Association of Pedagogues.

For its part, the Jose Marti Pioneer Children Organization presented Jose Ramon Fernandez with Los zapaticos de rosa Prize.

The ceremony was presided over by Politburo member and Minister of Higher Education Miguel Diaz-Canel; Olga Lidia Tapia, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party; Ena Elsa Velázquez, Minister of Education; Liudmila Alamo, First Secretary of the UJC; and Lazara Mercedes Lopez, First Secretary of the Communist Party, among other leaders.

Essential ideas by Fidel, present in the lives of Cubans since the times of the Literacy Campaign -like “there’s no Revolution without education” and “everything depends on education”- inspired the tribute, which was joined by students from artistic teaching centers and young talents like pianist Harold López-Nussa.
