Press Release: Embassies of Venezuela and Cuba Condemn Coup d’état against Honduras Constitutional President
In Honduras a brutal and criminal coup d’état has taken place. The Honduran President has been forcefully expelled from his country by the military and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Rodas, kidnapped when she was in company of the Ambassadors of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua who were trying to protect her with their diplomatic immunity. A brutal coup d’état has taken place and overthrown the legitimate and constitutional Government of Honduras.
The barbaric coup d’état is a flagrant violation of International Law and reminds us of the cavern age and bloody chapters of past dictatorships in our hemisphere. More than once our peoples have paid immense quotas of lives and blood under brutal military coups.
The countries members of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas ALBA, demand that the rule of law in Honduras is respected and the immediate restitution of the legitimate President of the Government of Honduras José Manuel Zelaya Rosales. We also demand the corresponding guarantees for the life of Minister Patricia Rodas. The military that captured Rodas violated international law and the Vienna Convention acting in the manner of the most cruel and violent military dictatorships of the past in Latin America. We call on the Armed Forces to respect the life of Patricia Rodas.
We reiterate are full rejection of the rupture of Honduras constitutional order and we demand the restitution of the legitimate and constitutionally elected authorities of Honduras.
