EU to urge closing of illegal US Camp in Guantanamo

Havana, May 29/2006 (ACN) European Union’s Foreign Ministers, gathered in Vienna over the weekend, agreed to urge Washington to close its detention camp in the illegally occupied Cuban territory of Guantanamo, which still holds some 460 prisoners.

The foreign ministers agreed that Europe can not keep ignoring the extensive international criticism of the US camp in Guantanamo, a prison that undermines the fight against terrorism and legal principles, according to EU Observer webpage.

“We agreed to a common line, which says that the US government must take steps to close the prison as soon as possible,” said Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller cited by Denmark's Radio (DR) news.

Observers say that the table is now cleared for confrontation with the US president George W. Bush who is scheduled to visit Europe next June 21 to attend an EU-US summit.
