Obama signs order to close down prison on the illegal Guantanamo base
WASHINGTON, January 22, 2009.—In an attempt to restore "due legal process" and improve the image of his country, U.S. President Barack Obama has fulfilled one of his principal election promises by ordering the closure of the prison, located on the illegal Guantanamo base in Cuba.
Around midday Thursday, the President signed the executive orders that establish the end of interrogation and torture of prisoners in this detention center, a review of trials in progress and the closure of the facility in a "time period of no more than one year," according to reports by BBC World.
Meanwhile, PL reported that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay today praised Barack Obama’s decision to close the prison, located on land illegally occupied by the United States in Guantánamo.
It was also revealed that 53% of U.S. citizens support the measure to close down the military prison, according to a survey conducted by ABC and The Washington Post.
The prison symbolizes one of the most infamous abuses of human rights committed during the administration of former President George W. Bush.
