United Nations Report Points to United States over Human Rights Abuses
GENEVA, March 27, 2007.- An official report presented Monday before the UN Council on Human Rights in Geneva revealed violations and abuses committed by the United States under the cloak of the "war on terrorism."
The document, prepared by Martin Scheinin, a UN commission on human rights special rapporteur, reports that US immigration authorities have adopted a series of policies and practices aimed at specific groups based on their countries of origin or nationality.
They also affect people from nations that are subject to special watch due to their religion, the report adds.
Scheinin mentions the detention of more than 8,000 men who were submitted to interrogations simply because they were Arabs or Muslims, and expressed concern at the drafting of terrorist profiles based on race or religious beliefs.
Another country under the magnifying glass was Germany, where, since 9/11, the Police have interrogated some 32,000 persons identified as supposed terrorists, but formal charges have not been brought against any of them.
The report adds that 8,120 persons were detained in five separate UK round ups in 2003 and 2004, based disproportionately on ethnic appearance. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
