Brazilian Personalities Reject Anti-Cuba Media Campaign
CUBA, April 3, 2010. Dozens of prominent Brazilian intellectual and artists have signed a statement in support of the Cuban people and rejecting a recent anti-Cuba media campaign led by the United States and its European allies.
Heading the list of signatories of the document, published by the Brazilian chapter of the network In Defense of Humanity, is architect Oscar Niemeyer and actress Leandra Leal.
According to a note published on Saturday by Granma newspaper, the Brazilian personalities recall that Cuba’s political Constitution was approved by the majority of its people.
They add that Cuba promotes free access to culture and shares its health and education experience and knowledge with many other countries in spite of Washington’s almost 50-year-old economic blockade.
“Isn’t it cruel cowardice to attack this heroic people and trying to teach them the meaning of democracy and human rights?” the signatories wonder.
Others who have signed the text include award-winning economist and author of the book “Theory of Independence”, Theotonio dos Santos; Joao Pedro Stedile, leader of the Landless People Movement; sociologist Teodoro Buarque de Hollanda; writer and businesswoman Marilia Guimaraes; composer Edino Krieger; poet Ledo Ivo, member of the Brazilian Academy of Arts; and filmmakers Walter Selles and Silvio Tendler.
