Cuban Ambassador to European Parliament Slams Condemnation of Cuba
CUBA, March 12, 2010. - The Cuban ambassador before the European Union, Elio Rodriguez, described as “interfering and disrespectful” a resolution approved by the European Parliament (EP) condemning Cuba.
Speaking to Prensa Latina news agency, Rodriguez said it is a maneuver against the Cuban Revolution and people and he added that even some EP members regard the document as an “exercise of political manipulation.”
“Once again the European Parliament sides with the US hostile policy against Cuba and ignores the independence and sovereignty we gained on January 1, 1959,” he stressed.
“Although the text is extremely unjust and disgraceful, it should not come as a surprise because the bloc’s so-called Common Position, which is interfering and undermines the normalization of relations between the European Union and Cuba, remains intact,” the Cuban diplomat explained.
Meanwhile, Willy Meyer, a parliamentarian from the United Left and Vice President of the Group of Friendship with Cuba, said the role of the EP is embarrassing.
“These legislators who voted for this resolution are the same ones that once refused to introduce a resolution to condemn last year’s coup d’état in Honduras,” he noted. “They are the same ones who don’t care about the death of civilians in Afghanistan,” he concluded. (Cubaminrex - acn)
