Statement of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society wa branch
Australia. March 18, 2010. - The Australia-Cuba Friendship Society, ACFS Perth Branch declares its ongoing support with the Cuban government and peoples, we reject the stand taken by the European Union in passing a motion of condemnation against Cuba for the death of prisoner Orlando Zapata-Tamayo.
This tragic event has been highly manipulated by the media and misconstrued for political purposes by those in the European Union who serve the US interests to discredit the Cuban Revolution.
It is with full confidence we accept that every attempt except invasive action against the wishes of the prisoner was made to avert his death, this included all warnings and the intervention of Cuban medical specialists. This was a self inflicted death; it is unfair to allege this death could have been prevented. We join with Raul Castro in his expression of lament for the loss of a life.
We hold up for scrutiny Cuba’s impeccable human rights record both for those born in Cuba and for those born elsewhere who are victims of natural disaster or impoverishment.
Cuba has a vast record of participation internationally in developing countries and when natural disasters have struck. There are currently around 37,000 Cuban cooperation workers in 108 nations of Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia who benefit from Cuba’s achievements in areas like healthcare and education.
The ACFS continues in our support to the Cuban people in this moment of yet another attack. (Cubaminrex – ConsulCuba Australia)
