People from Different Countries Oppose Media Campaign against Cuba

Cuba, April 19, 2010. Actions in solidarity with Cuba were staged in Spain, Chile and New Zealand over the weekend.

Thousands of people marched down the streets of Santiago de Compostela, capital city of the Spanish autonomous community of Galicia, to express their rejection of the most recent media campaign against Cuba, Prensa Latina reported.

Organized by the Galicia-Cuba Friendship Association, demonstrators took to several streets of the downtown area of the city, located to the northeast of the country, some 416 miles from Madrid.

Among participants were the national spokesperson for the Galician Nationalist Bloc party, Guillermo Vazquez; Galicia’s United Left leader Yolanda Diaz; and the general secretary of the Communist Party in the region, Carlos Portomeñe, among others.

One of the demonstrators read aloud a declaration slamming the media hostility against Cuba and noting that, by defending Cuba, they are also safeguarding the peoples’ right to freely decide on the economic and social systems of their countries without accepting foreign interference.

In Chile, the local Communist Party hosted a meeting to mark the Cuban victory over the Bay of Pigs invasion by US-trained mercenaries. Juan Andres Lagos, leader of the political organization, rejected the mainstream media distortion of the Cuban reality.

Lagos called all Chilean popular forces to extol Cuba’s international solidarity actions, especially those with Chile, during the May Day celebrations. Following the earthquake that recently hit that country, Cuba sent over a group of doctors who are working in two field hospitals.

On related news, another meeting in support of Cuba was held in New Zealand, where union leaders and locals expressed their solidarity with the Cuban government and people amidst a fierce international media campaign against the island.
