Thousands March Through Madrid in Support of Cuba
SPAIN, April 25, 2010. About 4,000 people marched through the streets of Madrid on Sunday to show their support for Cuba and denounce the most recent smear campaign launched against the island in Europe and the U.S..
Under the slogan of: Cuba is not alone, written in a large placard, the demonstration started from the Glorieta de Bilbao and finished in the central Plaza de Colon.
"Today is a day of solidarity with Cuba and its revolution and to proclaim to the world that the Cuban people are masters of their own destiny," the federal coordinator of the Spanish Izquierda Unida (IU) coalition, Cayo Lara, told PL.
"We are witnessing the biggest media hype, where the outlets of the information monopolies are opened up in a major way to any event occurring in Cuba, but are closed to the gross violations of human rights in the world," he said.
The IU leader called on the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to promote within the European Union the termination of the so-called Common Position adopted in 1996 at the behest of then president, José María Aznar, of the Partido Popular.
