We Must Globalize Resistance

CUBA, 10 February, 2007.- The 9th Conference on Globalization and the Problems of Development closed on Friday in Havana with a call to promote actions that defend humanity.

At the closing session, economics students from Latin America participating in the week long international forum handed Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage typical arts and crafts objects from their countries as a get well gift to Fidel Castro.

This present is coming from my heart, said Pintag Teran, of Ecuador, who wished Fidel a prompt recovery. "Get well soon, commander, we need you to lead," he said.

Roberto Verrier, president of the Cuban Association of Economists, noted that during the nine years of the Havana conferences on globalization, "we have seen many of the predictions made come to pass." He added, "This has been a classroom and the world a real laboratory."

Belgian intellectual Francoise Houtart read the final declaration of the In Defense of Humanity Network. Houtart made a call to globalize the resistance [to the neoliberal economic order], which he said has already begun and must continue to expand.

Other speakers on the closing day were: Jose Luis Rodriguez, Cuba’s Economy and Planning Minister; Yilliam Jimenez, vice minister of Foreign Affairs; Beatriz Mancheco, director of the Genetic Medicine Center and Ali Rodriguez the foreign minister of Venezuela.
