Havana Hosts Congress of the Caribbean Medical Association

CUBA, April 29, 2010. The Caribbean Medical Association (CMA) condemned on Wednesday an ongoing anti-Cuba media and political campaign to discredit and destroy the Cuban revolution led by the United States and its European allies.

A declaration read by CMA President Eugenio Selman-Housein Abdo during the inauguration of the Fifteenth Congress of the regional organization in Havana rejects the current smear campaign against Cuba and notes that, since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, the Cuban government placed public health as the most important of all human rights not only for the Cuban people but for the entire world.

An example of this is the gratitude and admiration that many peoples around the world feel for the Cuban health professionals who have made and continue to make a significant contribution in dozens of countries,” the text adds.

The Cuban representative before the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Lea Guido, pointed out that the universal access to health services is a Cuban strategy to fight poverty.

The event began with the lecture ‘Development of Medical Education in Cuba during the Revolutionary Period’ by Juan Vela Valdes, national director of Medical Education at the Ministry of Public Health.

The CMA is a non-profit NGO that has a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
