Over 5,000 Women in the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power

The number of women serving in the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power for 14th mandate period is 5,046, representing 33.4% of the total 15,093 delegates elected during the current electoral process, according to official information given to the press by the National Electoral Commission (NEC), on Monday.

Validating the results of the elections on 25 April and May 2 and 5 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds, Ana Maria Mari Machado, president of the NEC, said that such a composition means a growth of over 6% compared to the previous elections in 2007. The 887 extra reflects a greater awareness of the role women can play in these responsibilities.

She added that 10,921 delegates, 72.4%, are between 16 and 50 years old, that is to say, form part of the generations born after the triumph of the Revolution. Of them, 4,759, just over 31%, are under 40, and 2,465, 16.3%, less than 35 years old, indicative of the social recognition of younger candidates.

Other details about who will be part of the municipal organs of state power in the next two and a half years are that 13,176 have a higher education level and above, 87.3% of the total, higher than the 83.6% recorded in previous elections. 5,994 are black and mixed race, almost 40%, above the 34.7%, which is the racial composition of the Cuban population. More than 8,120 are linked directly to production, services and teaching.

Delegates re-elected to office, were 7,402, exceeding by 987 those who had that status in 2007. Over 80% of those who were nominated this time were elected and represent 49% of the total elected. This is a valuable element in the coming municipal assemblies as nearly half of its members will have the experience of one or more mandates with the support of those newly elected.

Ana Maria explained that they are currently intensifying the work of the Municipal Candidacy Commissions, which took office on March 28 chaired by the CTC and composed of representatives of mass organizations and students, who will be responsible for submitting proposals for presidents and vice presidents of the municipal bodies in their constitutive session scheduled for next Wednesday 19.
