Fidel and Raúl vote in municipal elections in Cuba

CUBA, April 25, 2010. THE Cuban leader Fidel Castro voted from his residence for this Sunday’s municipal elections and his sealed vote was sent via the electoral authorities to be deposited in a ballot box, as filmed by national television. President Raúl Castro was the first voter in Electoral College No.1 of Constituency 107, in Plaza de la Revolución municipality.
“I have just received the vote of our comandante from the hands of a member of the electoral college… It is sealed in an envelope and the slip is folded. He has voted,” said an official on depositing Fidel’s vote in a ballot box located in a school in the Vedado district.
Raúl arrived at the polling station before 7:00 am, greeted neighbors present and had an animated conversation with some of them about the fierce drought that is affecting some areas of the country. He underlined the gravity of the phenomenon, given that it is one of the fourth most intense in the last 109 years, and is already damaging supplies to around 500,000 people.
After a rendition of the national anthem, Raúl and constituency members witnessed the swearing in of members of the electoral table, headed by Lauids Pérez, and a review of the ballot box.
President Raúl Castro deposited his vote in a ballot box guarded by young pioneers Carlos Daniel Murguido and Andy Pérez Suárez, from the Joaquín Ferrer and Luis Arcos Bergnes elementary schools, respectively, whom he congratulated on fulfilling their civic and patriotic duties.
Before leaving, Raúl received a recognition from the College president for having been the first voter. She also asked him to send a message of greetings to Fidel on behalf of all the neighbors. (Cubaminrex- Granma)
