Cuban Singer-Songwriter Silvio Rodriguez Acclaimed in Puerto Rico
CUBA, May 31, 2010. Nearly 9,000 Puerto Ricans gave Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez a standing ovation as soon as he took to the stage of the Coliseum of Puerto Rico on Sunday.
Silvio Rodriguez, one of the founders of the Cuban New Song Movement, took off a baseball cap and vowed to the audience as fans continued to applaud the singer who returned to a Puerto Rican stage after 13 years of absence.
“It’s been 13 years since I last came to Puerto Rico. Thirteen is a good-luck number. I made my debut on a Tuesday 13 and I haven’t done so bad,” said Silvio greeting the public.
Accompanying Silvio in the concert were Puerto Rican singers and composers Roy Brown and Zoraida Santiago, who sang ‘Boricua en la luna’ and ‘Oubao moin’.
The Cuban singer-songwriter is scheduled to perform on June 4 at New York’s Carnegie Hall, where he will interpret pieces from his most recent album, Segunda Cita, as well as some of the emblematic songs that have accompanied him during his fruitful artistic career.
The previous tour of the US by the author of ‘Ojala’ and ‘El Unicornio azul’ took place in 1979. On that occasion, he offered several concerts in New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and Massachusetts, along with another icon of the Cuban New Song Movement: Pablo Milanes. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
