President of Artists Union Affirms Socialism is Guarantee of Unity of Artists and Intellectuals.
CUBA, 19 August 2011.- Miguel Barnet, the President of UNEAC (the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists), said that his organization would not exist if it were not for a socialist state , while speaking on the Round Table television show.
The 50th anniversary of the founding of this institution will be honoured on August 22nd, as well as its first president, national poet Nicolás Guillén.
Barnet, also a poet and ethnologist, said that the organization supports an extraordinary open, flexible, and democratic culture that constantly promotes the best spiritual values of the country. Producer Magda González Grau, vice-president of UNEAC, added that consensus is achieved in the analysis, and that constant debate and dialogue help recognize diverse opinions, which leads to more unity.
Omar Felipe Mauri, Secretary of the Presidency of UNEAC, emphasized the essential protection and renovation of traditions, and the importance of active participation in both social affairs and provincial committees of the organization. Caridad Diez, vice-president of UNEAC for Cuban Intellectuals, underlined that the members debate topics such as racism, social diversity, urbanism, and censorship. (Cubaminrex-ACN/RHC)
