Cuba Replaces Drug Imports with Local Produce

CUBA, August 10, 2009. The pharmaceutical group Quimefa has saved the Cuban economy over $2.5 million since 2008, when it began to manufacture 16 products that were previously imported.

Quimefa’s Head of Quality and Development Ramon Arango said that at present they guarantee 96% of the basic pharmaceutical products supplied to drugstores. Currently, Cuba manufactures 562 pharmaceutical products and imports 307 other products.

Cuba began substituting pharmaceutical imports in 1991, when the government allotted the necessary resources for the research and development of new products. Since then, Cuban laboratories have created nearly 400 products, some of which are also being exported.

The list of Cuban products includes antibiotics, eye drops, anti-inflammatories, and other drugs to treat asthma, cardiovascular disease, dermatitis, and parasites. (Cubaminrex- RHC)
