Cuba Produces Medical Equipment to Replace Imports
CUBA, September 17, 2009. Cuba is currently boosting the production of medical equipment in an
effort to replace costly imports; over 1700 different equipment have been already contributed by the Central Institute for Digital Research (ICID).
Some of the items designed and produced by ICID include electrocardiographs already being used in all Cuban hospitals and
health care centers; a monitor to measure physiological parameters known as Doctus 5, and the two-phase defibrillator Cardiodef-2. Also on the list are ambulatory, blood-pressure monitors and other equipment.
This year, ICID expects to produce 3,000 pieces of equipment in order to help the country save 2.1 million dollars in terms of imports; the figure is four times larger than what was reported in 2008.
The ICID, founded 40 years ago by Revolution leader Fidel Castro, produces 11 types of medical equipment for export. The entity belongs to the Cuban Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies. (Cubaminrex- RHC)
