Venezuela, Cuba Develop Petrochem Industry

VENEZUELA, November 10, 2009. Petrochemical of Venezuela (PEQUIVEN) described as satisfactory its participation in Havana International Fair 2009, where important projects were analyzed.

PEQUIVEN pointed out it participated in the November 2-7 meeting with the CUVENPEQ joint venture, in order to take part in Cuban petrochemical development.

CUVENPEQ general manager, Tomás Oviedo, said that in 2013-2014 period it will begin the project's first stage which includes a ammonia-producing plant construction with 661,380 tons annual capacity and a urea plant with 799 thousand tons annual capacity.

Oviedo pointed out that the 1.3 billion dollar investment will help to produce Vinyl chloride, plastic used in the building of Petrohouses, production of synthetic wood and other elements.

According to CUVENPEQ general manager, a high density polyethylene plant to produce 220 tons in a year and a polypropylene plant with 143 tones annual capacity will also be built, when the oil derivative obtaining progresses in the Cienfuegos Refinery.

The petrochemistry development in Cienfuegos will boost production and create 1200 jobs approximately, added Oviedo.

In the meantime, the refinery will develop a petrohouse plant (houses made of Vinyl chloride) in Cienfuegos province, which will produce seven to nine houses every day.(Cubaminrex- PL)
