Farmers are able to replace imports, said in closing Marino Murillo ANAP Congress

CUBA, May 17, 2010. Marino Murillo, Vice President of the Council of Ministers, said yesterday that the Cuban farmers are in position to raise agricultural yields and thus contribute to import substitution.

In the closure of the X Congress of the National Association of Small Farmers, ANAP, the also Minister of Economy and Planning, stressed the need to increase the production of meats, vegetables, grains, milk, meat and other items, for the country to stop buying them abroad.

Murillo said that they should use all available resources, diversify the production, ensure food for the animals, apply science and technology and enhance urban and suburban agriculture programs.

He said that institutions in each area should ensure the fulfilment of the contracts with the producers, and that marketing processes are carried out as quickly as possible.

He reported that recently concluded a projection of the Cuban economy until 2015, defining the main problems and challenges, which include reducing imports of food and raw materials and developing the animal food supply infrastructure.

The challenges we face are huge, in the middle of a very complex international situation, to advance economically and socially, will be necessary to employ all of our forces, in which the agricultural sector is essential and farmers play a key role, he said.
