Modern Oil Rig to Explore Cuban Waters.
CUBA, April 5, 2011.- The oil rig to arrive in Cuba this summer is one of the safest and most modern in the world, said a senior specialist of the Ministry of the Heavy Industry (MINBAS), Manuel Marrero.
He was the first speaker in the opening day of the Second Cuban Congress on Oil and Gas (PETROGAS 2011), in session until Friday at Havana's Convention Center.
In his lecture "Current Status and Prospects of Oil Exploration and Production in Cuba", Marrero said that in the search for oil in Cuba's exclusive economic zone of the Gulf of Mexico, the companies will be logistically supported.
Cuba has been working for years on the regulation and assessment of its oil exploration and production.
Cuba produced 21 million barrels of oil equivalent, and as a result of the investigations, great oilfields can be found in its exclusive area of the Gulf of Mexico.
More than 10 conferences including "Opportunities for Cuba in the Transformation of Hydrocarbons Within the Caribbean Basin and the Gulf" will be held on the opening day of the congress.
The head of the exploration of "Cubapetroleo", Rafael Tenreyro, will hold a conference on geology and the potential of oil in Cuban waters.
Also, Gonzalo Zamora of Repsol YPF from Spain will talk on techniques of structural geology applied to Cuba's folded belt.
The Second Cuban Congress on Oil and Gas is part of the Fourth Cuban Convention on Earth Science, which opened Monday with the participation of more than 700 delegates from 21 nations from all continents. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
