Another May Day to Remember in Cuba
| CUBA, MAY 4, 2009. Over half a million people filled Havana’s historic Plaza de la Revolution with their joy, vivacity, fighting spirit and patriotism yesterday, while the rest of Cuba rallied and congregated in the country’s main sqaures and municipalities to celebrate International Workers’ Day. Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and of Ministers, presided over the main ceremony this May 1st, celebrated along with the 50th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution and the 70th of the Cuban Trade Union Confederation (CTC). Salvador Valdés Mesa, CTC Secretary General, other Party, State and government leaders and grassroots organizations accompanied him on this occasion. |
Miguel D’Escoto, the current chairman of the UN General Assembly, and participants in the recently concluded Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, attended the massive rally as special invitees. George Mavrikos, Secretary General of the World Federation of Trade Unions, was among the more than 2,000 union leaders and leaders of social and Cuba solidarity movements from 80 countries present here.
