French Senators on a Visit to Cuba
CUBA, Apr 13, 2010. - A delegation of six French senators, headed by socialist Bernard Piras, president of the france-caribbean friendship group, is on an official visit to Cuba.
They’re parliamentarians from the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), the current party in the government, and of the Socialist Party, second political force in that country, the Granma newspaper reports on Tuesday.
Visitors met with Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon and with Tourism Deputy Minister Maria Elena Lopez.
The French Senate’s France-Caribbean Friendship Group is one of the largest in that House, with 59 members, representing the entire political spectrum of that European nation.
Over the last few years, it has backed actions in favor of Cuba, against the US blockade of the island, and in support of the struggle for the release of the five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly incarcerated in the United States.
Likewise, in Paris, it co-sponsored the main meeting to mark the 157th anniversary of the birth of Cuba’s National Hero José Marti, while in Havana it boosted the founding of the Victor Hugo Center, to pay tribute to this French writer whom history united to the Cuban Hero. (Cubaminrex - acn)
