Victory Over U.S. Gives Cuba Olympic Ticket
CUBA, April 12, 2010. The Mexican fans supported Cuba all the time in its 3-0 victory over the United States in the final of the NORCECA Youth Men's volleyball completed in Guadalajara.
With scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 the West Indians secured a place for the Ist Youth Olympic Games next summer in Singapore, and another for the U19 World Cup 2011.
The Cubans passed through the competition without dropping a set, with shutouts over Canada, United States, Guatemala and Puerto Rico before playing for the gold, in the second game against the Americans, champions in 2008.
The winning picture showed the offensive coordination between the outstanding Wilfredo Leon, and auxiliary attackers Denny Hernandez and Lazaro Fundora. The first was always over 14 points per game, except against Guatemala because he only played in the third quarter, and his two companions were over ten on average, acceptable for the blockers of the corners.
Puerto Rico beat Mexico for the bronze, 3-0 (29-27, 28-26, 25-23). Guatemala beat the Dominican Republic who finished fifth 3-1 (25-17, 27-25, 16-25, 25-23), while Canada edged 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 22-25, 25 - 20, 15-9) over Costa Rica to finish seventh. Curacao ranked ninth.
