Cuban Public Health Works for Better Services .

By Ileana Ferrer Fonte
CUBA, March 18, 2011.- The Cuban health system is implementing a series of changes to improve health care, Public Health Minister Dr. Roberto Morales said.

In remarks to reporters, Morales said those services are being restructured, identifying what and where they are needed, redeploying staff to optimize resources, and training new professionals.

Cuba currently has the largest number of specialists in history, as well as a high number of health care providers with master's degrees and doctorates, who are committed to the work of the Revolution and their people, Morales affirmed.

At present, about 146,000 students are studying medicine, 26 percent of all higher education students, and 24,000 of them are from many different nations, Morales said.

He stated that the country should further work for better leadership of medical staff, and said it was necessary to raise awareness among health workers, which together with science and a good management, will produce better results.

A group of journalists who worked abroad last year and others with more than 30 years of work in the sector received certificates of recognition in the meeting, also attended by several deputy health ministers and Tubal Paez, president of the Association of Cuban Journalists.
