Cuba to Hold 11 International Marathon in Honor to Jose Marti.
CUBA, January 24th, 2011.- (acn) Runners from more than 20 countries, including Cuba, will participate on January 28 in the 11th International Marathon in honor to Jose Marti (MARIMAR).
The marathon will take place in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, on the occasion of the 158th birth anniversary of Cuba’s national hero, and of the 496 anniversary of the foundation of that city.
Nearly 400 Cubans and about 40 foreigners, including undergraduates from different countries studying in universities from the province, will participate in this marathon.
The head of MARIMAR’s technical staff, Reinaldo Stable, announced that the competitors will undertake media marathon, 10 and 15 kilometers tests.
The latter will only award absolute winners in both genders.
A popular race for children, youngsters, adults and old people has been included in the program of the marathon.
Stable noted that renowned marathon runners Dailin Belmonte and Henry Jaen will also participate.
The first three places will be given trophies, souvenirs and recognition plaques, in all categories, including the best places in the popular race and the race for disabled people; except in the category of 15 kilometers.
The general director of MARIMAR, Ana Rosa Daudinot, talked about the importance of this event in the fusion of sports, culture, and science.
Prior to the marathon the 3rd Athletics Scientific Festival and a Festival in honor of Jose Marti, are also scheduled. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
