.

CUBA, December 15th, 2010.- The director of the Mario Negri Pharmacologic Research Institute from Milan, Italy, Gianni Tognoni, extolled the Cuban biotechnological industry, with high quality and very efficient medicines with competitive prices.

Tognoni said that the Cuban medical research system is very impressive due to its organization and integration, always prioritizing the search of effective products.

He also noted that industrial production, clinic assessment and commercialization are very well synchronized, ensuring the State the medicines for internal consumption and exports, which generates important incomes for the country.

The Italian scientist mentioned that Cuba’s medicine production is very competitive worldwide, and the alliances with big researching groups from China, India, Brazil and the European Union have contributed to its international position through the registration of medicines.

Tognoni added that this cooperation has allowed Cuba attaining significant advances in the field, and has allowed the development of research and production lines, very different to the ones established by the developed nations.

He pointed out that Cuba has been able to modify other existing products to avoid property disputes and patent laws by redirecting its productions.

Thus, Cuba has accomplished high quality medicines comparable or even superior to similar ones created by big transnational corporations, with very low costs.

If compared with other States or corporations that control the market, the Cuban policy allows producing effective medicines with very low costs, offering a very promising future on this field, he affirmed.

Gianni Tognoni attends the 5th International Workshop on Pharmacovigilance; the 5th International Workshop on Pharmacoepidemiology; the 2nd National Symposium on the Teaching of Pharmacology; and the 2nd International Workshop on Therapeutic Updating in Cancer, Asthma, and Endocrinology; among others underway in Havana.
