Cuba Prioritizes Quality in Health Services
.

CUBA; Feb 26, 2010. - Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer Cabrera stressed the need to uphold the achievements of the Cuban public healthcare system at all costs while addressing the general assessment meeting of the Department for Cooperation, Foreign Affairs and Information of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday

Balaguer said that healthcare delivery in Cuba must always abide by the highest standards of quality care to fully meet the people’s needs.

Regarding international cooperation, Balaguer said there are 38,000 Cuban healthcare professionals serving in 77 countries across the globe.

For years, Cuba has trained thousands of doctors to bring professional assistance to Cubans and people in need around the world. The Cuban internationalist medical brigades represent one of the greatest gifts of the revolution.

Addressing the general meeting, the head of the Central Committee Health Department, Gerardo Hernandez Gonzalez said that, despite the lack of resources, Cuba will continue to provide high quality medical care by avoiding wasting resources and maximizing efficiency.

Marcia Cobas, the vice minister of the Department for Cooperation, Foreign Affairs and Information at the Ministry of Health, announced the implementation of a new project aimed at providing follow-up care to more than 338,000 people identified as having physical disabilities in nearly 4,000 towns and communities across Venezuela.

She said Cuban professionals have already examined 471,701 cases in Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Ecuador; and that they would soon carry out the same studies in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Marcia Cobas also announced that Cuba will be providing special care to Haitian victims of the January 12 earthquake who lost limbs. “In order to increase our medical capacity, we are planning to open two new prosthesis labs and 30 rehabilitation centers, 16 of which are already providing free services to Haitians from all over the country,” she added.
