Cuba Celebrates International Children’s Day

CUBA, June 1, 2010. A message of love, happiness, and faith in a better world -possible and urgent- was shouted from the rooftops on Tuesday by Cuban children and adolescents, on the occasion of celebrations for International Children’s Day.

They celebrated this fiesta at pioneer children’s groups and centers, squares, libraries, computing and video clubs, parks, homes for children without family protection, hospitals and pediatric wards: in short, everywhere, in a country in which everything is constantly devoted to children, so they can enjoy life to the full, in that golden age childhood is.

On December, 954, the UN General Assembly agreed to celebrate International Children’s Day every year, a day for understanding and fraternity among all children of the world, on a date selected by each country, and Cuba, after the triumph of the Revolution, chose June 1st, as well as other nations.

Keyla Estevez, vice-president of the Jose Marti Pioneer Children Organization, told ACN that a comprehensive program was prepared for the occasion, which included recreational, cultural and sports activities at municipal level. As one of the many ways to celebrate, she mentioned the 4th International Festival of Audiovisuals for Children and Adolescents, CUBANIMA 2010, a biennial meeting organized by the Cuban Film Institute and his Animation Studios, with some of the best from the island’s artistic and literary production for children.

On Monday afternoon, the main celebration for International Children’s Day took place at Havana’s William Soler Pediatric Hospital, the 50th anniversary of which, in defense of health and life, were celebrated by Cuban children and the organization representing them.

As the closing of a successful national tour dedicated to April 4th –the day when the Jose Marti Pioneer Children Organization was created- and to the Congress of the Young Communists’ League, troubadour Lidis Lamoru, from eastern Holguin province, dedicated her songs to the little ones hospitalized at the “William Soler”, and also to their relatives and to the workers of that center, said Keyla Estevez.
