More Women Nominated for the Upcoming Elections in Cuba

CUBA, Mar 5, 2010. -  The nomination to date of 113 women as candidates for delegates in the eastern province of Las Tunas, is further evidence of the important role of females in the work of the Cuban society.

Although the figure represents only 30 percent of the candidates in the assemblies underway in each district, is six percent higher than that recorded in the previous similar process, held in September 2007.

This shows recognition of the growing participation in the work of the Cuban revolution women have, who constitute almost half the workforce in the civil governmental sector and two thirds of the technicians and professionals in the country.

Amado Batista, president of the Electoral Commission in Las Tunas, told ACN news agency that in this province the nomination of more women is one of the significant aspects of the ongoing meetings to elect the candidates for delegates to municipal assemblies of People's Power (government).

He said that another positive indicator is that, on average, attendance of the electors nominating meetings is over 85 percent in the territory, which is located about 670 kilometers east of Havana.

Batista said that the steps prior to the elections have been completed in accordance with the provisions of the national schedule for these partial elections to be conducted throughout the island on April 25.

On that regard, he pointed out the locations for the 1 373 polling stations in the province’s 8 municipalities have already been selected, and in each town the process of verification of the voter lists, among other assurances is already finished. (Cubaminrex - acn)
