Cardinal Jaime Ortega describes dialogue between Raúl and ecclesiastical authorities as highly positive
LAST Wednesday’s meeting between President Raúl Castro; Monsignor Dionisio García Ibáñez, archbishop of Santiago de Cuba and president of the Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops; and Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, archbishop of Havana was described by Ortega as "distinctive and innovative in a highly positive sense," during a press conference in the capital yesterday.
The meeting marks a new period in terms of links between the religious institution that he heads and the Cuban state, he noted, "Because it has been a dialogue on Cuba, our realities, the present and the future. He also confirmed his satisfaction with the results.
"These talks had a magnificent start yesterday and are due to be resumed shortly," he announced.
A visit to Cuba by Monsignor Dominique Mamberti, secretary for relations with states of the Holy See, was announced during the national and international press conference at the Archbishopric.

Monsignor Dominique Mamberti, secretary for relations with states of the Holy See, will arrive in Havana on June 15. Monsignor Mamberti has been invited by the Cuban Church and government to participate in events commemorating 75 years of relations between the Republic of Cuba and the Holy See.
During his stay in Havana Monsignor Mamberti will celebrate the Eucharist in the S.M.I Cathedral on Thursday, June 17 and will be present at the reception for the diplomatic corps to be given by the Apostolic Nunciature on Friday, June 18.
The visit by the secretary for relations with states of the Holy See also coincides with the 10th Catholic Social Week previously programmed to take place in Havana from June 16 to 20. For that reason, as previously announced, Monsignor Mamberti has also been invited to the opening of this ecclesiastical event, which he will do by giving a master lecture on the theme of State and Secularism in the Alma Mater of the University of San Jerónimo on Wednesday, June 16.
The Social Week is a study week that the Church periodically organizes to reflect on the Church’s social doctrine and its topicality in specific contexts. Experts resident on the island and in other countries have also been invited to this event.
The visit of Monsignor Dominique Mamberti is not related to approaches made in the last few weeks by the Church in Cuba to the country’s authorities in relation to prisoners and the Ladies in White.
