Cubans and Foreigners Out in Droves for May Day Celebrations in Havana

CUBA, May 1st, 2010. A large group of students from the Lenin High School and the Art Instructors’ School opened the May Day parade in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución. The square was filled with students, elementary schoolchildren, families, combatants, artists and workers who turned out for May 1 celebrations and to support of the revolution and its socialist project and to denounce the most recent smear campaign orchestrated by the hegemonic mass media.

International Workers Day parades were held from the westernmost tip of Cuba in Cabo de San Antonio all the way to the easternmost tip of Punta de Maisí. Voices across the island were unanimous in celebrating independence in complete freedom.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who gathered at the Revolution Square starting in the early morning, some 1,300 foreign visitors representing 152 organizations from 32 countries took part in the ceremony, which was presided over by Cuban President Raul Castro.

Celbrations began with a speech by Secretary General of the Cuban Workers Federation Salvador Valdes. The event was attended by Politburo members, officials of the Central Committee Secretariat, and representatives from different unions, and grassroots and political organizations.
