Changes in Cuban Public Health Announced in Parliament.

CUBA, 30 July 2011.- The current situation and the increase of medical cooperation with various countries have led to an overhaul of the Cuban public health services, said Cuban Public Health Minister Roberto Morales.

The minister submitted a report to the Cuban Parliament Public Health and Sports Commission Friday, and said the strategy followed fundamentally keeps the levels reached in health services with a noticeable reduction in the budget.

He said that further measures do not change the essence of Cuban public health, still giving continuity to the ideas by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro Ruz.

Among the changes there will be a reduction in the number of polyclinics, hospitals and maternal homes, without affecting the population, and there will be a concentration of efforts in the facilities with the best conditions.

The number of maternal homes was reduced to 142, but they will guarantee the best care with the best specialists on the field at any time.

Jorge Gonzalez, president of the Commission, advocated for a mental transformation among the leaders in the health sector and in the whole population, for the transformations to have a positive impact. Gonzalez said the Family Doctor Program represents the base for many changes, and the support of lawmakers is fundamental. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
