Cuba: Commission for 2012 National Population and Housing Census Established

CUBA, March 25, 2011.- The Coordination Commission for the 2012 National Population and Housing Census was officially established on Wednesday during a ceremony in Havana.

José Carlos Puente Suarez, acting director of the National Statistics Office, said that the Commission will supervise all the actions of this process scheduled for September 2012.

Juventud Rebelde newspaper reports that the census will serve to update the official number and characteristics of the Cuban population and also to record reliable information on demographic, economic and social aspects that are important for the Government’s decision-making process.

Puente announced that students of different levels, depending of the specific requirements of each area, will participate in the process.

He also announced that a rehearsal of the census will be carried out in the municipalities of Candelaria, in the western province of Artemisa, and Segundo Frente, in eastern Santiago de Cuba.

There have been 17 official censuses in Cuba, the first one taking place in 1774 and the latest in September, 2002. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
