Cuban University Students to Debate on Peace and People’s Sovereignty.

CUBA, 1 April 2011.-  Cuban university students in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba will host “ONUCARIBE 2011” in order to promote cultural and scientific exchanges between youths.

The event, scheduled from April 4 to 7, in the Eastern University, will bring together more than 70 delegates to debate on the need of pacific dialogue, and the need to promote world activities against racism, xenophobia, and for the protection of the environment.

The president of the Organizing Committee of the event, Yisell Rodriguez, explained that in this Model of the United Nations of the Eastern University, the participants will represent the sessions of the UN General Assembly and its Security Council.

The main topics to be discussed in the different commissions will be Women, Peace and Security; the Right to Food; and the US economic, the financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than 50 years.

A journalism student from that University, Elena Diego, explained that ONUCARIBE 2011 is an academic event in which students will act as political negotiators and will assess international relations.

Diego, who is taking part in the event for the second time, noted that this time the delegates will represent the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and others will act as Israel, Libya, and Iran.

She added that this year, the Model is dedicated to the forthcoming voting of a resolution that Cuban will present against the US blockade, the 49th anniversary of the Young Communist League, and the Sixth Congress of the Cuban Communist Party. (Cubaminrex-ACN)
