UN Regional Goals on Biodiversity Announced in Havana.

CUBA, July 5th, 2011.- The commitments of Latin America for the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity were presented this week during the opening session of the 8th International Convention on Development and the Environment.

Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of that treaty, explained the scope of the regional initiative in the presence of 900 delegates from 35 countries participating in the event, which will run until Friday at Havana’s Convention Center.

“The first goal is having sectors of the population and governments with protectionist policies make progress in their understanding on the preservation of the flora and fauna”, expressed Djoghlaf. Details of the commitments related to the Latin American region were offered by Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, approved in Paris in 1994, which came into effect two years later after receiving ratification number 50.
