New York, May 4.- The Dance Magazine Award, given for 50 years to the most luminous figures of the world of dance, has been confered to Cuba´s leading male ballet dancer, Jose Manuel Carreno.

Carreno graduated as the most outstanding student of the Cuban National Ballet School in 1986 and joined the Cuban National Ballet under the direction of Alicia Alonso, becoming lead dancer in 1992.

His brilliant career has won him many awards and brought him to the stages of the London Real Ballet, the Bolshoi and St. Petersburg Marinski Theater Ballet, the Scala of Milan, the Rome Opera, the American Ballet Theater, the Asami Maki in Japan, and the National ballets of Canada and Holland.

Adhering to the dictum that "Art does not have a homeland, but the artist does," Carreno has said that much as he loves his career of dancing in the entire world, he can never be away from Cuba for long periods.
