Cuba Will Build More Hotel Rooms during 2005

Havana, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) Managed by state-run Cubanacan, Gran Caribe, Gaviota and Habaguanex companies, and foreign firms, Cuba will add 2,200 rooms to its hotel inventory durint 2005, according to Havana-based Destinos tourism journal.

Tourism Ministry officials informed 1,110 rooms would be remodelled in tourist resorts located in Pinar del Rio, Havana, Varadero (Matanzas), Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Cayo Coco (Ciego de Avila), Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.

One of the most promising projects is carried out by Habanaguex group, engaged in the administration of hotel and hostals, restaurants, cafes, bars and other cultural institutions in Old Havana to multiply the number of rooms in correspondence with its short and middle term strategies until 2010.

In recent statements, Havana City Historian Office´s Investment Director Ricardo Nunez Fernandez asserted high demand keep the 440 rooms they operate fully occupied and growth prospects were very ambitious until 2010.

"The goal looks very promising and will be accomplished in line with the financial resources we have," Nunez Fernandez indicated.

Presently, Habanaguex operates various hotels such as Los Frailes (The Friars), similar to a medieval abbey, the Conde de Villanueva (Villanueva Count), suitable for people fond of Cuban cigars, and the Armadores de Santander (Santander Shipowners).

It also possesses 31 restaurants, 81 shops and 63 cafes and bars, and the recently-opened Cuban Perfume House, a drug store resembling similar facilities from past centuries.
