New Phase of the Energy Revolution

CUBA, January 13, 2007.- The Energy Revolution in Cuba went into a new phase with the start of work on the first groups of generators that will produce electricity using fuel oil in seven territories of the nation.

During the celebrations of Day of the Electrical Worker that took place in this province, Yadira Garcia Vera, Basic Industry minister, announced that by 2008, 59 new generating parks with a total capacity of 1700 megawatts will be completed.

This, together with the 400 megawatts (that should also be increased this year) that are generated using natural gas, will make it possible to gradually close and put into conservation (mothballing) a number of the 30 most inefficient generating units of the nation's thermoelectric power plants.

The works starting in the new generating parks are taking place in the provinces of City of Havana, Havana, Matanzas, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey and the special municipality of the Isle of Youth.

Minister Garcia Vera highlighted that 2007 is going to be a year in which the electricity sector workers are going to have to make a big effort, a year during which the priority programs of the Energy Revolution will continue.

Included in this phase are the replacement of inefficient electrical household appliances for new efficient ones, the installation of circuit breakers at the service entrance of every home, the eradication of the areas of high voltage, the improvement of the electricity transmission and distribution networks, and of the attention provided to the population at the national electrical company commercial offices in each of the provinces.

The Minister handed Pablo Samper, the director of the Basic Electrical Organization of Ciego de Avila province, the certificate that credits the province with fulfilling all the goals set for the 14th of January, the Day of the Electricity Worker. Several workers were given the Nico Lopez award for their 20 and 25 years of uninterrupted work. By Ortelio González .(Cubaminrex-Granma)
