CHINA, November 15, 2006.- Chinese health authorities recently endorsed a Cuban natural cholesterol-lowering drug known as PPG, to be distributed in their country. Thanks to new agreements between China's Shandong Zibo Shanchuan Pharmaceutical Company and Cuba's Dalmer laboratories, PPG (Polycosanol or Ateromisol) -- made from the sugarcane extract -- will contribute to lower cholesterol levels in this Asian nation. During a ceremony in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People, Shanchuan Pharmaceuticals president Che Xiliang called the registration and distribution of permits for the Cuban product another demonstration of cooperative ties between the two countries, according to Juventud Rebelde newspaper. At the ceremony, Ken Yuannan, head of internal medicine services at the China-Japan Friendship hospital, presented a summary of his study of the effects of PPG on Chinese patients; this confirmed that the Cuban medicine will contribute to the reduction of the lipid levels in blood and will relieve other conditions affecting the public. According to the agreements, the medicine will first be imported to the Asian country for distribution; at a later stage it will be produced and packaged in a modern plant of the Shanchuan pharmaceutical group. Speaking at the ceremony, Alberto Blanco, counselor of the Cuban embassy in China, explained that PPG, created in 1991, has been registered in more than 30 countries. The PPG was awarded with the gold medal by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1996 in recognition of its significant health contributions. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
