Cuban Scientists Analysing Ways to Ease Drought

Havana, March 10 (AIN)-Cuban scientists are investigating new methods in attempts to ease problems associated with the lack of water caused by the severe drought affecting the country; a phenomenon that is affecting over a hundred countries worldwide.

The drought might be due to a change in the rain cycle, for which specialists are analysing the possibility of changing crops accordingly, stated Gisela Alonso, President of the Environment Agency. This agency, in charge of effecting strategies and policies related to the environment along with the Institute of Hydraulic Resources are working together, sharing scientific and technical data.

Among the measures specialists are exploring is the rationing of water, the reducing of contaminants, as well as the use of agricultural varieties that require less water.

Other environmental priorities related to meteorological phenomena in Cuba are cyclone and hurricane preparation and the improvement of early warning systems and models.
