Successful
Trial Results for New Cuban Cancer Medicine
Havana, Sep 5 (AIN) LeokoCIM, the name given to a new Cuban pharmaceutical
product to treat cancer, has received successful preliminary results
in 24 hospitals throughout the island.
LeokoCIM was produced by the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM)
and Cuba's National Center for Bioproducts (BIOCEN) and approved in
2002.
Patents for the drug have been registered in eight countries. Clinical
trials began in April of last year and will conclude at the end of
2005.
LeokoCIM increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment and
reduces the risks of bacterial infections in patients with malignant
tumors. The drug will substitute a similar US version called Neupogen,
which is scarcely available in Cuba due to the US blockade and very
expensive in other countries.
