More than 8000 Cubans with D.Sc. Degrees
CUBA,January 23, 2007.- More than 8,000 Cubans have got their D.Sc degrees over the past three decades, 60 percent of those degrees have been granted on the island.
Cuba began to promote and implement a national policy related to the scientific degrees since March of 1977 with the creation of the National Commission for Scientific Degrees, said Doctor Carlos Peniche, commission member. He noted that 90 percent of diploma discussions have been held in Cuban institutions since 1992.
Some 400 of D.Sc theses are annually discussed on the island for which 55 juries have been set up.
The National Commission of Scientific Degrees grants the diplomas and validates degrees obtained by Cuban scientists in other countries. Forming a doctor of sciences takes the training of a university graduate who is expected to present a thesis on a specific kind of research work, that allows him to contribute to the country's scientific development and to the formation of other doctors of science, said Carlos Peniche.
Next January 26, the University of Havana will announce the best theses presented in Cuba during the 2005-2006 school year.
