Statement by the Permanent Representative of Cuba , Ambassador Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, under item 167 "Peace, security and reunification on the Korean peninsula". Plenary of the General Assembly, 31 October 2007
Mr. President,
Cuba welcomes the draft resolution entitled "Peace, Security and reunification on the Korean peninsula", contained in document A/62/L.4, submitted jointly by the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea . We consider that it is a telling demonstration of the positive results that can be obtained through dialogue and cooperation.
Inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation are paramount to consolidate peace and security on the Korean peninsula and further contribute to peace and stability both in the region and at the international level.
Cuba has always supported and will continue to support the peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula. Because of this reason, my country welcomed the inter-Korean Summit held from 2 to 4 October this year and the Declaration on the Advancement North-South Korean Relations, Peace and Prosperity, adopted on October 4 as a result of the aforementioned Summit .
We are satisfied at the determination, announced by both parties, to fully implement the Declaration, as part of the process towards a peaceful reunification.
During the Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, held last year in Havana, the of Heads of State or Government stressed the importance of guaranteeing a durable peace and security in the Korean peninsula for the sake of the common prosperity of the Korean people as well as the peace and security of North-east Asia and the rest of the world.
Likewise, the NAM Summit expressed its support towards efforts to reunify the Korean peninsula through the genuine aspirations and concerted efforts of the Korean peoples themselves in a way as is stated in the North-South Joint Declaration issued at the historic North-South Summit Talks held in Pyongyang on 15 June 2000.
Cuba , as it has so far done, will continue to fully support the Inter-Korean dialogue, reconciliation and reunification process.
