UN Anniversary Observed in Cuba

CUBA, November 29, 2007.-  The 62nd anniversary of the United Nations was celebrated in Cuba on Wednesday with the inauguration of a photo exhibition that illustrates the UN Millennium Development Goals.

This is the first time that the UN agencies have made a joint presentation to show the support for the process of growth on the island, explained Susan McDade, the UN representative in Cuba .

She further noted that Cuba is one of the few countries that have achieved universal education and healthcare, while carrying out policies to promote the population's right to food.

Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration Orlando Requeijo said that Cuba is working together with the UN on projects related to human development, identifying natural disasters and risks, healthcare and food security.

President of the Cuban Association of the United Nations Carlos Amat said that cooperation with Cuba shows what can be accomplished with a political will to carry out projects that benefit the people.

A recently released 2007-2008 UN report rates Cuba fourth in human development among Latin American countries, in which the quality of life, income, health and education are measured. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
