UN Director Praises Cuba on Environment

CUBA , July 4, 2007.-  Executive Director of the UN Environment Program Achim Steiner said  he was optimistic at Cuba "s achievements in sustainable development and environmental education.

Steiner, invited to the Sixth International Environment and Development Convention, extolled the Energy Revolution program underway in the Caribbean country, to achieve a more rational use of energy resources.

The UN official noted that Cuba has invested in the development of protected areas, and in mechanisms to reduce the impact of destructive or severe weather phenomena, which will be more frequent in the coming years.

The executive director called the convention "outstanding," and added that it shows Cuba "s concern for the integration of social and environmental programs.

He also urged for joint actions to fight global warming, which not only affect developed nations, those which are mainly responsible for that problem, but also the rest of the planet.

Steiner also spoke about the unifying role of the United Nations to coordinate and increase the countries" actions to fight increasing global warming.

Concerning the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization), Steiner said the problem is not to promote food production, but to guarantee sustainability. (Cubaminrex-PL)
