United Nations Special Rapporteur to Visit Cuba
CUBA, October 26, 2007.- The UN special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Jean Ziegler, will begin an official visit to Cuba next Sunday at the invitation of the Cuban government.
Ziegler's upcoming visit is in tune with Cuba's willingness to resume this particular modality of cooperation with UN universal and non-discriminatory mechanisms in the field of human rights. The action follows the decision, last June, by the Human Rights Council to finish the mandate of the so-called personal representative of the Human Rights High Commissioner for
Cuba.
Ziegler will learn about several projects and programs underway on the island to guarantee food for all Cuban citizens and to keep advancing the construction of an increasingly fair society, despite the difficulties Cuba faced under the economic, commercial and financial war imposed on the country by Washington.
During his stay, which will last until November 6, The Special Rapporteur will meet with Cuba officials and visit several provinces.
